Day 65 – Robbs, Illinois to Marion, Kentucky

October 7, 2016

Into the Bluegrass State

Friday I was up just after 5:00 at the Bay Creek Campground in Robbs.  After cleaning the bike a little and doing some maintenance it was one of the few mornings where I was on the road before 7:00. [Read more…]

Day 64 – Carbondale, Illinois to Robbs, Illinois

October 6, 2016

Frostie Root Beer Returns

As you can probably gather from the title of this post, not a whole lot went on on Thursday’s 51 mile day.

It started off with trying to eat breakfast at the motel and catch up on the hurricane about to hit Florida. However, the desk clerk wanted to have a one way nonstop conversation about politics, his kids, his second job, lack of sleep, working on his friend’s truck…   Nice guy, but you wonder how these kinds of talkers can go on and on like that. Day 63 – Chester, Illinois to Carbondale, Illinois

October 5, 2016

Riding the Backroads

Wednesday morning I woke up in Chester to storm clouds passing over. I thought the forecast had called for mostly clear skies for the week, but it didn’t look good. I got things packed up and when I was ready to go a light rain that was falling had stopped. [Read more…]

Day 62 – Farmington, Missouri to Chester, Illinois

October 4, 2016

Crossing the Mississippi

Tuesday, October 4th was the two month mark of the trip and the other day I went over 3,000 miles. Now I’m at 3,122. For the 52 days of riding that puts me at a 60 mile per day average, and with the rest days included it’s an average of 50 miles per day. [Read more…]

Days 60 and 61 – Ellington, Missouri to Farmington, Missouri; rest day

October 2, 2016

Civil War Country

In riding with Charlie, Marcus and Kirsty the past week, a lot of events seem to revolve around eating. The only place open Sunday morning in Ellington was the store at the gas station, so that was the stop.  They had a couple of tables indoors where you could sit after buying your breakfast sandwich and biscuits and gravy, which is popular around here. An older man was sitting at the table when we arrived.  I’ve mentioned thick accents, but this guy, combined with his very raspy voice, put him over the top. [Read more…]

Day 59 – Houston, Missouri to Ellington, Missouri

October 1, 2016

The Ozark Hills Finally Appear

Saturday was going to be a long day, 77 miles from Houston to Ellington.  I had thought that the hills in the Ozarks hadn’t been that bad, but would find out this day that you don’t get away that easy. [Read more…]

Day 58 – Marshfield, Missouri to Houston, Missouri

September 30, 2016

Friday Night Football

While talking with a few people in Marshfield and then listening to a group of older men around a table Friday morning at the Uptown Cafe, it wasn’t hard to notice that many of the people around here have a tremendously thick country accent.  It’s strong to the point where sometimes you’re not quite sure what they’re saying.  They’ll talk about things such as “I slept with the wind’ers open last night.” [Read more…]

Day 57 – Ash Grove, Missouri to Marshfield, Missouri

September 29, 2016

Into the Ozarks

The ride on Thursday began with heading over to Mike’s house to return the key to the Ash Grove Community Center (where I slept). His and other homes in the neighborhood already had fall decorations and pumpkins on display, so the town looked good. [Read more…]

Day 56 – Pittsburg, Kansas to Ash Grove, Missouri

September 28, 2016

Pies and Subs

Wednesday ended up being a 72 mile day into Missouri and the town of Ash Grove. I had enjoyed my stay in Pittsburgh. It was a nice city with an old, brick Rexall drug store on the north end. I hadn’t seen one of those in years. As I’ve said, even though you’re doing this trip at a slow pace on a bicycle, you still don’t have all the time you would like to spend in these towns. Day 55 – Chanute, Kansas to Pittsburg, Kansas

September 27, 2016

The Dogs are Barking

I had woken up extra early in Chanute on Tuesday due to noise in the city park.  Earlier the day before I had seen a young  cyclist cruising by on her racing bike while at one of the stores along the way.  As I was packing up at 5:30 she walked over to me and introduced herself. Her name was Stephanie and she’s going to Yorktown as well, but with the support of her friend who is driving a camper van.  Stephanie brought to me a nice bag full of all kinds of snack food for the day’s ride, which was quite nice of her.
